The tenth-grade honors English class of Canfield High School participated in civic action, an initiative to encourage education through service to the community.

During the first weeks of the semester, students created several different topic proposals and submitted them before the class. Ultimately, they voted on Sammy Sorice’s idea to have a book drive for the local branch of Akron Children’s Hospital.

Throughout the semester, the students dedicated time in and out of class to ensure the project’s success. They wrote morning announcements, made boxes for drop off, spoke with representatives from Akron Children’s, created fliers to post around the schools and even enlisted the help of several local businesses. The students were granted a day to visit the district’s elementary and middle schools to speak to the younger students about the importance of giving.

Through the efforts of the students, the donations from the sister schools and the generosity of several independent benefactors, they were able to donate almost 1,500 books to Akron Children’s Hospital. On the day of the delivery, the students helped sort, box and transport the donation to the library, where they were greeted by a thankful volunteer staff.
