Commissioners hire attorney to refute RG Steel claim
WARREN — The Trumbull County Commissioners are acting to challenge the claim of RG Steel that the Warren and Howland school districts and other entities owe the former steelmaker $3 million.
Commissioners this morning hired Atty. Michael A. Gallo of Nadler Nadler and Burdman of Youngstown to represent the Trumbull County auditor and treasurer in legal action RG Steel filed July 29 asking that the auditor and treasurer take steps to have the money paid from the entities to RG Steel.
The commissioners hired Gallo in April to analyze a decision the Ohio Supreme Court and Ohio Board of Tax Appeals made indicating that RG overpaid tangible property taxes from 2001 to 2003 and the money is now owed to RG Steel.
At the time, Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins said RG’s demand would “impose a substantial burden on the local school districts and political subdivisions from whose tax revenues the refund would be exacted.”
