Someone in Colorado is holding the winning Powerball ticket for a $90 million prize. The Colorado Lottery says it’s the largest Powerball jackpot won in the state.
It says the winning ticket for Saturday night’s multistate drawing was purchased at a Kum & Go convenience store in the small western city of Rifle. The ticketholder has yet to come forward. The winner matched the five winning numbers — 3, 12, 31, 34, 51 — and the Powerball, 24.
The Colorado Lottery says the $90 million jackpot amounts to an estimated $54.9 million cash payout. The store will get a $50,000 commission.
Plane crash in Iran leaves 39 people dead
TEHRAN, Iran
A passenger plane built in Iran crashed shortly after takeoff in Tehran on Sunday, killing 39 people and reviving questions about the safety of a cash-strapped aviation sector left hobbled by international sanctions.
President Hassan Rouhani offered his condolences to victims’ families and quickly ordered an investigation into the crash. Similar planes operated by Iranian carriers will be grounded until the probe is complete, he directed. The plane was based on a relatively obscure Ukrainian design that has been involved in previous Iranian air disasters.
The Sepahan Air regional airliner, bound for the eastern town of Tabas, went down in a residential area shortly after takeoff at 9:20 a.m. from Tehran’s Mehrabad airport.
State TV said the plane’s tail struck the cables of an electricity tower before it hit the ground and burst into flames.
24 rescued from stuck roller coaster
UPPER MARLBORO, Md.
Authorities say 24 people stranded on a roller coaster have been rescued from near the top of the ride at Six Flags America in Maryland.
Prince George’s County fire officials say it took about five hours Sunday to rescue 17 adults and seven children from The Joker’s Jinx roller coaster.
Assistant Fire Chief Paul Gomez says the riders were sitting upright. A few had cramps, back pain and dehydration, but there were no major injuries.
A Six Flags America spokesman said it is not clear what caused the ride to stop but that it has a computerized safety system that “performed as it is designed to.”
Study: Keystone carbon pollution more than figured
WASHINGTON
The much-debated Keystone XL pipeline could produce four times more global-warming pollution than the State Department calculated earlier this year, a new study concludes.
The U.S. estimates didn’t take into account that the added oil from the pipeline would drop prices by about $3 a barrel, spurring consumption that would create more pollution, the researchers said.
Outside experts not connected to the study gave it mixed reviews.
The researchers estimate that the proposed pipeline, which would carry oil from tar sands in Canada to refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast, would increase world greenhouse-gas emissions by as much as 121 million tons of carbon dioxide a year.
