YOUNGSTOWN

The Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., is taking registrations for its fall/winter classes.

The Butler North houses the Dennison Education Center, the new home of the Butler’s education department. It is located next to the Butler Institute on the corner of Wick Avenue and University Plaza.

Classes will take place at an additional location, the Butler Trumbull Branch, at 9350 E. Market St., Howland.

BUTLER NORTH

CHILDREN’S CLASSES

• Cartooning: Mondays for four weeks, Sept. 15 through Oct. 6. And/or Jan. 12 through Feb. 2. Fee $40, grades 5 to 8, 4:30 to 6 p.m.

• Paint With Clay (homeschoolers): Wednesdays for four weeks, Sept. 17 through Oct. 8 or Thursdays, Sept. 18 through Oct. 9. Fee $32, grades 1 through 8, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

• Pop! Goes the Art: Saturdays for four weeks, Sept. 20 through Oct. 11. Fee $32, grades 1 and 2, 10 to 11 a.m.; grades 3 and 4, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; grades 5 through 8, 2 to 3 p.m.

• Personalized Drawing (all levels): Mondays for four weeks, Sept. 15 through Oct. 6 and/or Oct. 20 through Nov. 10 and/or Jan. 12 through Feb. 2. Fee $40. Ages 14 and up, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

• Bringing Reality to Canvas (all levels): Saturdays for five weeks, Oct. 25 through Nov. 22 and/or Jan. 17 through Feb. 14, ages 14 and up, 10 a.m. to noon.

• Basic Watercolor (beginners): Thursdays for four weeks, Oct. 23 through Nov. 13. Fee $50. Ages 14 and up, 6:30 to 8:45 p.m.

• Painting Birds/Snow Scenes (all levels): Sunday, Nov. 30. Fee $50, supply fee $6. Ages 14 and up, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

FOR EVERYONE

• The Butler offers free programs. During free family days at the Youngstown Butler, Sundays at 1:30 p.m., children and their parents can listen to a story in Sweeney Children’s Gallery and visit an exhibit. Then they will return to Sweeney and create a work of art. The program appeals to preschool through primary-grade children. Oct. 19; Nov. 16; Jan. 11, 2015; Feb. 15, 2015; March 15, 2015; and April 12, 2015.

• Free family days at Butler Trumbull comprise an afternoon of art and literature. A librarian reads a story and an art instructor directs an art activity. The program is geared to children 10 and younger accompanied by an adult. Saturdays at 2 p.m. Oct. 18; Nov. 22; Jan. 17, 2015; Feb. 21, 2015; March 21, 2015; and April 18, 2015.

• Beyond the Art with Butler Director Lou Zona is another free program. Zona will recall events related to the art and artists who have exhibited during the past 30 years at the Butler. Talks will be in the Beecher Center Auditorium, main floor. Sunday and Aug. 17 at 2 p.m.

• To increase your knowledge of art history, Butler docents present a continuing education program. The series takes place at noon Tuesdays, free of charge. Call 330-743-1107, ext. 117.

MISTOVICH IS NEW EDUCATION DIRECTOR

The Butler welcomes Joyce Mistovich as the new education director. She has been an art educator for decades in Boardman schools.

Education: She graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Youngstown State University. She also studied as a post-graduate student at Ashland, Walsh, and Kent State universities.

Professional: From 1974 to 2011, she was the art educator for seventh and eighth grades at Boardman Schools. She worked on projects including the Boardman Schools Television Network, and until 2011 as a supervisor at Boardman Center Middle School television. Mistovich was a camp counselor and director for the Boardman Park Summer recreation program with a focus on the arts.

Community: She is president of the Boardman Park Commissioners, served as the 2014 judge for the Boardman High School Art Show and was an active member of the Junior League of Youngstown. As a member of the Boardman Pride Committee, Mistovich has worked on projects with the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, Mahoning Retired Teachers Association, the Youngstown Foundation/Hine Memorial Fund, Habitat for Humanity, and many other community organizations. She is a board president of the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence. As a community volunteer, Mistovich has given her time to Boy Scouts of America, Lowellville Garden Club, Eastern Orthodox Women’s Society and St. Charles Church, among others.

Awards: Mistovich was a 2010 nominee for the ATHENA Award, and this year she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Boardman High School.

Affiliations: Professional affiliations include the National Education Association, the Literary Society of Public Libraries (Mahoning County) the American Junior Leagues International, the Trustees Circle of the Butler and Lions Club International.
