YSU volleyball squad earns academic honors
YOUNGSTOWN
For the first time in program history, the Youngstown State volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 season, the AVCA announced on Monday.
The award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average.
The Penguins had a 3.28 cumulative GPA in the fall and a 3.51 in the spring, bringing their mark for the year to 3.398. In the spring, all but one Penguin had a GPA of at least 3.2. Aly Ryan and Erika West both had a 4.0 GPA in the spring.
Lowellville 5K race scheduled Aug. 16

Run with the Rockets, a 5K run and 1-mile walk, will take place Aug. 16, beginning at 9 a.m., at Lowellville High School.

Pro Am golf event slated at Pennhills Club
BRADFORD, PA.
The Blaisdell Pro Am Invitational is scheduled Aug. 18 beginning at 10 a.m. at Pennhills Club.
The tournament is sponsored by Zippo and will feature PGA head golf professional Jake Northrup. Each foursome will consist of three amateurs and one PGA professional.
The entry fee is $200 which includes lunch, golf, tee gift, range balls, hors d’oeuvres and dinner.

Warren service clubs meet on softball field
WARREN
A softball game pitting the Kiwanis Club of Warren against the Warren Rotary Club has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County complex at 812 Route 193 in Vienna.
The public is invited to join the service club in a fun evening which also includes a picnic supper after the game.
Adrian wins 100 free at Nationals; Phelps 7th
IRVINE, Calif.
Nathan Adrian led all the way to win the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. national championships, with Michael Phelps finishing next-to-last in a star-studded field. Adrian touched in 48.31 seconds on Wednesday night, winning the event for the sixth time in seven years. Ryan Lochte was second in 48.96. Jimmy Feigen finished third in 48.98. Phelps was last at the turn and straggled home in 49.17, beating only Seth Stubblefield. It was Phelps’ worst showing since launching a comeback in April.
In the women’s 100 free, Missy Franklin surged over the last lap to win in 53.43, tying for the fifth-fastest time in the world this year. Simone Manuel, the quickest qualifier in morning preliminaries with a career-best time, finished second in 53.66.
Canada’s Raonic advances in Toronto

Milos Raonic wasn’t perfect. He didn’t need to be to advance in the Rogers Cup. The Canadian had his serve going amid some erratic shots as he came back to beat American Jack Sock 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) on center court Wednesday night at Rexall Centre. Raonic will face Julien Benneteau of France on Thursday night. Benneteau upset 11th-seeded Ernests Gulbis on Wednesday.
Novak Djokovic got pushed to the limit earlier in the day before beating Gael Monfils 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2).
Wozniacki advances in Montreal Rogers Cup
MONTREAL
Caroline Wozniacki, the former world No. 1 from Denmark, breezed through a second match in a row with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Klara Koukalova on Wednesday at the Rogers Cup.
Top-ranked Serena Williams dispatched Samantha Stosur 6-0, 6-2 in a match interrupted 28 minutes by a sprinkle of rain.
