Waste dumping

COLUMBUS

Ohio Senate Minority Leader Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, is calling for tougher penalties for illegal waste dumping in response to the 28-month prison term and $25,000 fine imposed Tuesday on Ben Lupo.

Lupo pleaded guilty to violating the federal Clean Water Act by ordering the discharge of oilfield waste into a Mahoning River tributary in Youngstown.

Schiavoni said some provisions of Senate Bill 46, which he introduced last year to stiffen the state penalties, were rolled into the environmental portion of House Bill 490, which Schiavoni said he hopes will be passed this fall.
