The Trumbull County Republican Party’s Central Committee on Tuesday night chose J.D. Williams of Liberty to run against Democrat Mauro Cantalamessa for Trumbull County commissioner in the November election.

Williams, a commercial pilot and retired 34-year veteran of the Air Force Reserves, had no Republican opponent at the meeting in the Johnson Community Center.

Williams, whose other run for office was in the Democratic primary for state representative in 2010 against eventual winner Sean O’Brien, said in his speech that it’s “time for a new system of concepts, values and practices that will lead to a better Trumbull County.”

He also was described as a fiscal conservative by former county party chairwoman Kathi Creed, who nominated him.

“I will not stand here and promise to do things for you that I cannot do. But I will promise not to lie to you, not to waste your money and not to promise that I can do more for you than you can do for yourselves.”

Randy Law, party chairman, told the central committee after the vote, “Ladies and gentlemen, we can win this race.”
