Penguins are 21st in preseason coaches poll

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State football team cracked the preseason top 25 by being ranked 21st in the FCSInsider coaches poll which was released Monday afternoon.

The Penguins are coming off an 8-4 campaign and are one of four Missouri Valley Football Conference teams in the top 21. North Dakota State is ranked first, South Dakota State is 10th and UNI is 15. Southern Illinois sits right outside the top 25 at No. 27.

Champion/YSU golfer wins collegiate preview

CONCORD

Youngstown State golfer Thomas Lydic, a Champion graduate, shot a 4-under 66 on Monday to win the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf Collegiate Preview No. 2 at Little Mountain Country Club. The event was for golfers aged 17-22.

In the girls competition, Michele Whiteleather of Canfield was fourth, Haleigh Guerrero of Warren fifth and Nadya Stratton of Poland sixth.

Youngster sets several swimming records

Dean Boyd, 10, of Boardman broke seven pool records in the Youngstown Swim League this summer while swimming for the Boardman Tennis and Swim Club.

He set records at his home club, Applewood and Warren Olympic Club.

Boyd, who also swims year-round for Penguins Swim Team at YSU broke four team records, in the 50 free, 50 breast, 50 fly, and 100 Free. He also qualified and swam for Team Ohio at the all-states meet in Indiana.

Mata, Rooney lift United to Cup title

It’s only a preseason tournament, and the trophy isn’t exactly steeped in soccer history. None of that mattered to Wayne Rooney and Manchester United. Rooney and Juan Mata scored two minutes apart in a second-half flurry, Jesse Lingard added an insurance goal in the final minutes and Manchester United rallied to beat longtime rival Liverpool 3-1 in the title match of the International Champions Cup on Monday night.

Steven Gerrard scored on a penalty kick in the 14th minute for Liverpool, which topped United twice last season in Premier League play.

The U.S. men’s national team cut John Wall, Bradley Beal and Paul Millsap on Monday, a person with knowledge of the details said, leaving the roster at 16 players. The Americans made the cuts that had been planned for Saturday but were delayed after Paul George’s injury, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the roster moves were to be announced Tuesday. They were first reported by Yahoo Sports.

Remaining in the roster pool are: Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant, Chicago’s Derrick Rose, Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Houston’s James Harden, Atlanta’s Kyle Korver, Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins, Dallas’ Chandler Parsons, Utah’s Gordon Hayward, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan, Portland’s Damian Lillard, Denver’s Kenneth Faried, Detroit’s Andre Drummond and Brooklyn’s Mason Plumlee. They will report to Chicago for practices that begin Aug. 14.
