Man charged with June assault in Champion park

WARREN — Jamie Jewell, 20, of state Route 193 in Dorset, Ohio, is in Trumbull County jail in lieu of $7,500 bond after being charged with felonious assault in an incident in June at Willow Lake Park on Mahoning Avenue in Champion.

A not-guilty plea was entered for him Monday in Warren Municipal Court. He was arrested over the weekend after a warrant was issued for him July 7.

Champion police were called to the swimming pool and campground at 7:17 p.m. June 30 for a disturbance. The park owner, John Bayus, reported that he had been dragged by a man in a car and was injured.

Bayus said the incident began when he observed a female spinning her tires in the park’s grass. He stopped the vehicle near the exit and advised her to wait for police to come.

A male, later identified as Jewell, got in the driver’s seat, with the female moving to another seat in the car.

He spun the tires in the gravel and dragged Bayus through the parking lot before Bayus fell off and the vehicle left the scene, Bayus said.

Police identified Jewel through witnesses and arrested him later.
