A Warren-based company is planning to make its facilities a year-round destination with the purchase of a local hotel.

Avalon Holdings Corp. purchased the Magnuson Grand Hotel and intends to complete a multimillion-dollar renovation to the site, said Ronald Klingle, CEO of Avalon Holdings. The site will be renamed The Avalon Resort and Spa.

The Magnuson was built in the 1960s and originally was named the Avalon Inn. The building is right next to the Avalon Golf Course.

“It had always been an excellent place to stay, but in the last few years, it had become a little dated,” Klingle said.

The intent is that after the renovation, the facility will be one of the best places to stay in the country, he said.

Improvements to the resort and spa are expected to occur over the next year.

The resort will become part of the operations of the Avalon Golf Course and Country Club.

Klingle believes the new site will allow the facility to host various convention and company events that will draw a number of people to the area. It will be able to compete with convention facilities at or near hotels.

“Why go somewhere else, when you can drive an hour or possibly a couple of hours and have everything you need?” he said.

In addition to having access to Avalon Lakes Golf Course, Squaw Creek Golf Course and Buhl Golf Course, those who are at the resort also will have access to 11 tennis courts both indoor and outdoor, indoor golf area, indoor and outdoor pools and other amenities, Klingle said.

The indoor pool at the resort will be one of the largest in the area, he said.

“The goal is to make sure people have the best possible facilities no matter what the weather,” Klingle said. “It won’t matter if the weather is beautiful or not so optimal.”
