Scrappers’ bullpen collapses; Lake Monsters rough up Garcia

Jose Brizuela’s two-out RBI double in the fifth inning ignited the Vermont Lake Monsters to Sunday’s 6-2 victory over the Mahoining Valley Scrappers.

Brizuela’s double scored Yairo Munoz to snap a 1-1 tie in the New York-Penn League game. J.P. Sportman also scored when right fielder Juan De La Cruz committed an error.

The Lake Monsters (20-3) added three runs in the sixth inning. After Max Kuhn and Trent Gilbert led off with singles, both advanced on a passed ball.

Gabriel Santana’s single scored Kuhn for a 4-2 lead. Seong-min Kimh followed with a two-run double.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Scrappers’ Leo Castillo hit a solo homer to tie the game.

The Scrappers’ other run came in the sixth inning when Greg Allen doubled and took third on a wild pitch by Tyler Hollstegge. Steve Patterson’s sacrifice fly scored Allen.

Justin Garcia (2-1) relieved Jose Zapata in the fifth inning and took the loss. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits.

Jerad Grundy (2-5) earned the win, scattering four hits and allowing one run in five innings.

D’vone McClure doubled for the Scrappers (21-29).
