Lake Monsters hold off Scrappers

BURLINGTON, VT.

Gabriel Santana hit a two-run homer and three Vermont pitchers combined for four shutout innings of relief to lead the Lake Monsters to a 3-2 victory in a New York-Penn League game on Saturday at Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters (19-30) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to Santana’s home run and a RBI double by Ben McQuown that scored Jose Chavez, who reached on an error.

Mahoning Valley (21-28) got within one run in the top of the fourth thanks to doubles by Steven Patterson, Francisco Mejia and D’vone McClure.

Sean Brady (2-2) got the loss, giving up three runs in 41/3 innings. Edward Estrella pitched 32/3 innings of shutout relief.

A.J. Burke (4-2) pitched the first five innings to get the win for Vermont. Koby Gauna pitched the ninth to get a save.

The Scrappers play twice more in Vermont, then return to Eastwood Field for a six-game homestand beginning Wednesday.
