Book group to talk about murder mystery
SALEM
“The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective,” written by Kate Summerscale, is the book selection for the Aug. 26 meeting of the Salem Public Library’s adult book discussion group. The group will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. in room No. 11 of the Salem Memorial Building, 785 E. State St.
The story begins in June 1860 with the gruesome discovery of the body of 3-year-old Saville Kent at the bottom of an outdoor privy. All of England was horrified by the crime, which led to a national fascination with crime detection. This fascination ironically destroyed the career of perhaps the greatest detective in the land.
Copies of the book can be borrowed from the Adult Services Department of Salem Public Library, or you can download a copy through the library’s website at www.salem.lib.oh.us.
Salem Public Library’s Adult Book Discussion takes place on the fourth Tuesday of every month. It is open to the public and free of cost. Registration is not required. Call the library at 330-332-0042 for more information.
