Last month tied for 7th coldest in Mahoning Valley

Last month was tied for the seventh-coldest July for the Mahoning Valley but wasn’t that far away from being No. 1.
The average temperature last month for the area was 68.1 degrees, which is 2.4 degrees below normal for the Valley.
The coldest July was 67 degrees — only 1.1 degree lower than last month — in 2000.
“It was a very cool July with cold days dispersed throughout the month,” said Tom King, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland. “There were days where Youngstown didn’t get out of the 60s.”
The highs July 19 and July 28 were 68 degrees, and 69 was the high July 29. The average highs on those days in the Valley are 81 to 82.
It never reached 90 degrees last month, with the month’s high of 89 on July 1. It reached at least 85 degrees just four times last month.
In comparison, July 2013 — a typical July — had 10 days of at least 85-degree temperatures, including two days with a high of 91.
Last month, the temperature was at 50 degrees or lower five times compared with once in July 2013.
The coldest day last month was July 18 with a low of 46 degrees.
Despite the low temperatures, no low-temperature daily records were broken last month.
There were 21 days of at least a trace of rain last month. Even so, the area had just 3.41 inches of rain — 0.9 of an inch less than normal for July in the area.
This should be a normal August with an average temperature of 69.2 degrees, King said.
