U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J. will be the guest speaker at the Aug. 22 Mahoning County Democratic Party’s Chairman’s Dinner.

Tickets are $500 a person for the event taking place at the Zoldan family residence in Canfield from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“It’s a big land for us,” said county Democratic Chairman David Betras. “He is a rising star in the Democratic Party. He’s been on the national stage, and now he’s coming to Mahoning County.”

Booker, former mayor of Newark, was elected to the seat in an August 2013 special election, and is up for re-election in November.

“I am both pleased and proud that Sen. Booker has agreed to attend and headline this very important annual event,” Betras said. “His life and career embody the principles and philosophies that are the very foundation of the Democratic Party. His personal story and his unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life in his city, his state and our nation are both inspiring and uplifting. I’m really looking forward to his visit to the Valley.”

Booker served as mayor of Newark, New Jersey’s most populous city, from 2006 until his election to the Senate seven years later.

“As a former mayor of a major city, Sen. Booker understands the challenges and opportunities our local leaders confront each and every day,” Betras said.

The complete schedule for Booker’s visit to the Valley still is being developed by his staff and officials of the Ohio and Mahoning County Democratic parties.

Anyone interested in attending the dinner can contact the party Treasurer Richard Clautti at 330-502-2997 or visit the party’s website www.mahoningcountydems.org or visit its Facebook page.
