Mooney’s Reese plays hero for Wooster

Cardinal Mooney graduate Eddie Reese hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday to lift the College of Wooster to a 13-9 victory over Allegheny College. The win clinched first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference East Division for the Fighting Scots.

Wooster (23-12, 13-3 NCAC East) is the No. 1 seed in the East Division and will play host to Ohio Wesleyan (12-22, 6-10 NCAC West), the fourth-place team from the West, in a three-game set Saturday and Sunday, with the winner advancing to the NCAC Tournament.

MAC tabs McDonald’s Tayala for hammer win

CLEVELAND

Matthias Tayala from McDonald was one of three Kent State track and field athletes to be honored by the Mid-American Conference this week.

Tayala won his second men’s Field Athlete of the Week award after he finished first out of 27 participants in the hammer throw on Saturday at the Drake Relays with a mark of 70.56m (231’ 6”).

Dior Delophont won the women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors with a second in the high jump and Wayne Gordon was named men’s Track Athlete of the Week for his sixth in the 100.

YSU football quartet cited by honor society

YOUNGSTOWN

Former Youngstown State football players Kurt Hess, D.J. Moss, Torrian Pace and Dom Rich were selected to the 2014 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, the organization announced on Tuesday. The NFF Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career.

A total of 838 student-athletes from 267 schools qualified for membership in the society’s eighth year.

Mobile Meals contest offers Sharon pit pass

Trumbull Mobile Meals is holding a raffle for a 2014 season pit pass to Sharon Speedway. Tickets are three for $5 and the winner will be drawn at the TNT night fundraiser on May 14. The winner need not be present.

Committee won’t dictate conference schedules

The College Football Playoff selection committee does not want to dictate how many conference games leagues play. Playoff executive director Bill Hancock and the FBS conference commissioners are meeting this week to work out remaining details of the four-team playoff that will replace the Bowl Championship Series.

The Southeastern Conference recently announced it will stay with an eight-game league schedule. The Pac-12 and Big 12 play nine games and the Big Ten is moving to a nine-game slate. The Atlantic Coast Conference plays eight league games, plus five of its teams will play Notre Dame each season. “The (selection) committee will not be in the business of dictating to conferences their scheduling,” Hancock said.

NASCAR penalizes pair involved in fight

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

NASCAR punished Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears on Tuesday for their post-race altercation in the garage at Richmond International Raceway that led to Ambrose punching Mears in the face. Ambrose was fined $25,000 and placed on probation through May 28. Mears was fined $15,000 and received the same probation.

Real Madrid in final of Champions League

MUNICH

Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals apiece Tuesday, and Real Madrid advanced to the Champions League final by beating defending champion Bayern Munich 4-0. Madrid completed a 5-0 aggregate victory and will play Chelsea or Atletico Madrid in the May 24 final in Lisbon.
