Howland student released to dad after found with toy gun

HOWLAND

A male student at Howland High School was released to his father Friday morning after the principal was informed the student had a gun.

The weapon, which the principal found in the student’s book bag, turned out to be a clear, white plastic toy with an orange tip that shoots plastic, hollow pellets.

The student had not threatened anyone, but another student reported the weapon to the principal.

The student told the principal and Howland police resource officer that he brought it to school because he was going to a friend’s house after school.

In consultation with the Trumbull County juvenile prosecutor, no criminal charges were filed, and the matter was left for the school district to handle, police said.
