Fitch tops Harding, 14-2, in softball game

Cali Mikovich and Alex Franken went a combined 8-for-8 Thursday as Austintown Fitch (9-6) defeated Warren Harding (0-13), 14-2, in softball. Mikovich hit two home runs and added a triple and single and five RBIs. Franken singled three times, doubled and drove in two runs. Nicholette Zordich singled, tripled and had two RBIs and Alex Corradi added a single and double. Winning pitcher Sierra Pierce scattered four hits, including a triple by Harding’s Rukiya Allen.

Youngstown Christian posts win over East

YOUNGSTOWN

Sam DeJesus had three hits on Thursday and Youngstown Christian had three big innings to beat East, 15-6. The Eagles scored three runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and three in the seventh to break open a 5-3 game. Aaron Beebe went the distance to get the victory. East’s Brandon Jackson took the loss despite striking out 10. Jackson also doubled and scored two runs.

YSU women’s coaches host hoops camps

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State women’s basketball coaches will host two camps for individuals and a team camp this summer as part of the university’s summer camp series. Head coach John Barnes and his staff will host a four-day camp for players entering fourth through eighth grade from June 23-26, and there will be an individual elite camp on Aug. 3. A camp for varsity and junior varsity teams will be on June 21.

The four-day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day and costs $95. The elite camp is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $75. The team camp costs $225 per team.

Freshman twins staying at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky.

Kentucky twin freshman guards Andrew and Aaron Harrison will return for a second season to a stocked Wildcats squad coming off an NCAA championship appearance. Both had been mentioned as possible NBA first-round draft picks after leading Kentucky’s march through the NCAA tournament. The twins said in a statement through the school they were returning for another shot at the title.

UConn’s Daniels off to NBA, Boatright staying

STORRS, Conn.

National champion UConn announced Friday that forward DeAndre Daniels has filed the necessary paperwork with the NBA and will forgo his senior season of eligibility. It also said that guard Ryan Boatright will return next season. Daniels averaged 13.1 points and 6.0 rebounds during the season and Boatright averaged 12.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

Phelps uses 50 free to perfect his butterfly

MESA, Ariz.

Michael Phelps’ comeback meet was cut short Friday when he failed to advance to the 50-meter freestyle final. The 18-time Olympic gold medalist used the morning preliminaries at the Arena Grand Prix to fine-tune his butterfly stroke instead of doing freestyle like everyone else. He finished seventh in a time of 24.06 seconds, missing out on the eight-man evening final.
