Community band in spring concert

CANFIELD

The Canfield Community Concert Band will present a spring concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at Canfield High School on Cardinal Drive.

Admission is free, but nonperishable food items and monetary donations will be accepted for Operation Blessing.

Housed at Canfield Presbyterian Church, Operation Blessing distributes food to needy families and is supported by local churches, high school groups, businesses and individuals.

The concert program will feature “Give Us This Day — Short Symphony for Wind Ensemble” by David Maslanka, plus music by John Williams, Henry Mancini and more.

Founded in 1976, the Canfield Community Concert Band has grown from 12 players to 50, under the direction of Eric Bable.

Free jazz program

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Lifelong Learning Institute will present the second installment of “Jazz: An Enduring Musical Tradition” at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the gathering room of Park Vista, 1216 Fifth Ave.

Ewelina Boczkowska, assistant professor of musicology at Youngstown State University, will lead the lectures.

Alton Merrell, assistant professor of jazz piano and studies at YSU, will be the featured performer.
