Jenkins wins Franklin B. Walter All Scholastic Award

Canfield High School senior Richard Jenkins is the 2014 recipient of the Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award.

The Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award was established by the Ohio Educational Service Center Association (OESCA) to promote and recognize outstanding academic achievement. This event honors each Ohio county’s best and brightest student. Each district high school nominates a student for this award. Each county then chooses a winner.

Jenkins is currently ranked in the top 10 percent of his class and maintains a 4.055 grade point average. Throughout high school, he has immersed himself in rigorous coursework, including many advanced placement classes. In addition to his outstanding academic record, Jenkins has been very involved in extra curricular activities during his high school career. He has been a member of the high school choir and drama clubs for the past four years, serving as vice president for both organizations. He is a member of The National Honor Society, Senior Class Officer, President of the Leo’s Club and is a state speech and debate qualifier in the category of Duo Interpretation. He was also recently recognized as a 20 under 20 outstanding young adult by Parent Magazine and the Tribune Chronicle.

Jenkins recognizes the importance of academics and extra curricular activities, however, giving back to his community is what he is most passionate about. It is his work at The Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley that has impacted him the greatest. Each month he and another student organize and oversee student volunteers that serve meals to those in need.

Jenkins will attend John Carroll University in the fall majoring in Biology with a special emphasis on community service. He is the son of Richard and Christine Jenkins.

Criteria for this selection includes the individual’s activities, awards, personal goal statement, GPA and ACT/SAT score.

Jenkins was invited to attend a special recognition luncheon at the Double Tree Columbus-Worthington April 9, where he represented Mahoning County. He will also be recognized by the Mahoning County Educational Service Center in May.
