Local golfers do well in junior tour event

Kaylee Neumeister of Cortland won the girls age 15-18 competition and Brian Terlesky of Youngstown lost in a playoff in the boys 15-18 division of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event held Saturday and Sunday in Painesville.

Neumeister took a three stroke lead into the second day of competition after a first round 80. She followed up on Sunday with an 83 that extended her winning margin to six strokes.

Terlesky and Mitchell Lehigh of Gnadenhutten were tied atop the leaderboard with a 73 after the first day and both shot 74 on Sunday. Lehigh parred the first playoff hole and Terlesky shot a bogey.

Canfield’s Vrabel earns weekly pitching honor

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.

Saginaw Valley State University sophomore pitcher Sarah Vrabel (Canfield) was named the Great Lakes Interscholastic Athletic Conference softball pitcher of the week in late March.

Vrabel led the Cardinals to four conference victories against Walsh and Lake Erie. She pitched 13 innings in two outings including a 10 inning 2-1 victory in game one against Walsh. She gave up just eight hits on the weekend with an ERA of 1.38.

M.V.R. wins Pacentrani Bocce League crown

YOUNGSTOWN

The M.V.R. team defeated the Pacentrani Club, 15-7, 15-8 to capture the Pacentrani Bocce League championship.

M.V.R. team members included Danny Brott, Lou Cannatti, Bob Pomaro, Bill Neher, Don Depaul, Mike Provenzale and Rich Slanina.

Sharon Speedway set for 2nd week of racing

Hartford

After a successful 85th anniversary season opener last week, Sharon Speedway will host the second round of “Steel Valley Thunder” Saturday night.

The Hovis Auto & Truck Supply DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and Deforest Used Parts Mini Stock will return along with the debut of Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Sportsman Modifieds.

Race time is 7 p.m. It’s Scout/youth sports night with free admission for those in uniform.

Phelps having fun in return to swimming

Michael Phelps is making a comeback after nearly two years out of the pool for the simplest of reasons: He missed the sport that has been his entire life. Having shed the 30 pounds he piled on since retiring after the 2012 London Olympics, Phelps will resume his career starting today at the Arena Grand Prix. He will swim the 100-meter butterfly, an event in which he holds the world record. He dropped his plans to compete in the 100 freestyle the same day.

Jones returns to Drake for shuttle hurdle relay

DES MOINES, Iowa

Lolo Jones has decided to run the Drake Relays after waffling on a return to her hometown meet a year ago. But rather than compete in the high-profile 100-meter hurdles, Jones will make her transition from the bobsled back to the blue oval in a much more relaxed event. The two-time Olympic hurdler and 2014 Sochi Games bobsledder will take it relatively easy Friday night when she competes in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Real Madrid wins first leg 1-0 over Bayern

Real Madrid hopes a narrow home win put it in position to reach the Champions League final for the first time since 2002. Karim Benzema scored in the 19th minute to give the Los Blancos a 1-0 victory over defending champion Bayern Munich on Wednesday night in the first leg of their semifinal.

The second leg is Tuesday in Munich. Chelsea hosts the other semifinal next Wednesday following a 0-0 tie at Atletico Madrid this week.
