Police seek shooter of Ohio teen

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Police are urging people in a western Ohio community who know the 17-year-old suspect in another teen’s slaying to persuade him to surrender.

Springfield police Stephen Moody says police hope to avoid more violence. Police have released the identity and other information about the youth, who attended an alternative school.

He is being sought after the fatal shooting early Sunday of a popular Springfield High School football player who police say was trying to be a peacemaker during an apartment parking lot altercation. Moody says 17-year-old Jeff Wellington knew the gunman.

The Associated Press is not naming the suspect because of his age.

The Springfield News-Sun reports that plans are being made for services and memorials for Wellington.
