When Gina Heeter was trying to think of an idea for her third-grade class at St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary to study famous people through history while making the endeavor fun, she thought back to her own past in school for the idea of having the nine-student class do a wax museum on March 25.
In a wax museum, the students research and then portray a famous person from history, increasing their skills in a variety of areas.
“When I was in school I did a wax museum, so I thought it would be a fun way for them to research a famous person,” Heeter said. “They picked their famous person. I made sure there was a variety, like athletes, writers, first ladies.”
In the process, the students researched their famous person through the internet and books. They had to have a speech that was at least three minutes long and write the speech down on notecards. They then had to give the speech in front of their class, tasking their public speaking skills. The students then did a podcast in computer class, during which they recorded their speeches and made a Powerpoint to go along with it that had slides of their famous person. They also made backboards that had information on their famous person and they had to have at least one prop, as well as dress up like their famous person, for the event.
“They learned technology with the podcasts and the Powerpoints,” Heeter said. “They learned researching informational texts through the biographies and books and the internet, writing skills in writing the speech because they had to write as if they were the person, public speaking, how to speak loud and clear.”
Some of the choices the students made for their projects were Martha Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Kate Winslet, Orville Wright and Gabby Douglas.
Carson Firby chose Sidney Crosny of the Pittsburgh Penguins as his famous person.
“Me and my mom and my dad were just thinking about it and my mom watches a lot of (hockey), so we just picked that,” Carson said of why he chose Crosby.
Carson said he learned several facts about Crosby that he didn’t know before.
“How many goals he made, he won the Stanley Cup trophy and the Art Ross trophy,” he said.
Nevada Ruby picked aviator Amelia Earhart, saying she chose Earhart, “Because she’s very fascinating and I thought she was pretty cool.”
“This is a big project but they did a wonderful job,” Heeter said.
