The YWCA of Youngstown is offering a free program, “Stand Against Racism,” from 8:30 to 11 a.m. April 25 at Youngstown State University’s Kilcawley Center.

The program includes a screening of the movie, “An Ordinary Hero: The True Story of Joan Trumpauer Mulholland,“ followed by a discussion with Mulholland.

Raised in a Southern religious home by parents who were segregationists, Mulholland became involved in non-violent protests during the Civil Rights Movement. She helped plan and attended the March on Washington in 1963 and worked alongside Medgar Evers and other civil- rights leaders.

SlimDown program

Humility of Mary Health Partners registered dietitians, trained in adult-weight management, are offering the six-week SlimDown weight management program in April and May. The program focuses on lifestyle changes in food, activities and behaviors.

Classes are 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, April 30 to June 4, at St. Joe’s at the Mall, Eastwood Mall (behind Sears), Niles; and Thursdays, May 1 to June 5, at the D.D. and Velma Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman.

The cost is $40 for new participants and $20 for repeat participants. To register online, go to HMpartners.org and select “Events.” Choose the start date of the program wanted and select the “Register Now!” bar. Registration deadline is one week before the program begins. There is no registration at the door.

American Meatout

“The Great American Meatout” is coming to Evergreen Seventh-day Adventist Church, 7668 Glenwood Ave., from 2 to 4:30 p.m. April 27.

Dr. James Krystosik, radio talk show host of “The Other Side of Medicine,”will be the speaker. A vegan dinner, free blood pressure screenings, door prizes and day care are available.

Advanced registrations, due by April 22, are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12. The cost at the door is $18 per adult and $13 for children under 12.

Recovery program

Recovery coaches affiliated with the Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic help individuals who are impacted by addiction gain access to the resources, services and support that will assist them to achieve long-term recovery.

This program, free and open to the public, is offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Fridays at the Sahara Club II, 2345 Youngstown Road S.E.

“Recovery coaches are peers that are in long-term recovery themselves, and will help an individual to overcome barriers in their path to a life in recovery,” said Chad Wiltrout.

He said coaches are not therapists and do not offer counseling, therapy or other clinical services. Rather, they are peers who assist clients on the path from life of addiction to a life of recovery.
