Former Phantom honored

Former Youngstown Phantom Sam Anas is quickly putting together an impressive list of honors in his first hockey season at Quinnipiac University.

The latest honor is the Tim Taylor Award, which goes to the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey National Rookie of the Year.

The Hockey Commissioners Association honored Anas as the country’s top freshman after he led his team and all NCAA freshmen with 22 goals and 43 points this season.

Anas also was a plus-9 and tied for the team high with 10 power-play goals.

Anas, a native of Potomac, Md., spent two seasons in Youngstown where he scored 54 goals and recorded 97 points in 115 career games.

Other honors Anas picked up this season were ECAC Hockey Co-Rookie of the Year, George C. Carens Rookie of the Year by the New England Hockey Writers Association and the College Hockey News Rookie of the Year.

He was named to the 2014 ECAC Hockey Second Team and the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team.
