A township firefighter has resigned after several months on “injured on duty” leave, Fire Chief George Brown told trustees at their meeting Monday.

Tod Terlecki was a Boardman firefighter more than 15 years and made about $57.000 a year, Brown said.

His injury occurred in spring 2011. He was in and out of work, but last worked in September 2013. He was replaced by a full-time firefighter in January. Terlecki exhausted his injured-on-duty benefits.

“This is not a surprise,” Brown said of the resignation.

He was disciplined by the department along with another firefighter for receiving payment from a former Boardman firefighter, Clifford Phillips, to take his shifts.

In March, Phillips paid the township more than $50,000 in restitution for paying the firefighters, which cost the township money since he was collecting benefits while others took his shifts.

In other business, trustees approved a memorandum of understanding for the 2014 joint paving program with Canfield and Austintown townships to save the township money on pavement projects. They also approved the township’s spending more than $21,000 on waterproofing the basement at the main fire station on U.S. Route 224. The station had to be treated for mold removal. If water comes back in the basement, mold will grow again, Brown told trustees.

The next trustees’ meeting will be at Good Hope Lutheran Church at 5:30 p.m. April 28.
