Robert Shroder, president and chief executive officer of Humility of Mary Health Partners, has received the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s William G. Lyden Jr. Spirit of the Valley Award.

The award, presented to Shroder at the chamber’s annual meeting and luncheon, recognized his strong leadership and cumulative impact on the positive image of the Mahoning Valley.

Each year, the chamber honors community and business leaders for their contributions to the Youngstown-Warren area, whether it be through philanthropic activity or advocating for the business community.

Shroder said he is “very honored and humbled by this distinction.”

But he said: “I truly believe an individual award is not due to what a person has done, but what an entire team has accomplished. I have been blessed with a great and stable team, a fantastic and insightful board and an excellent medical staff.”

Since joining Humility of Mary Health Partners 17 years ago, Shroder has upheld HMHP’s ministry of Jesus by caring for the poor and under-served, officials said.

Through many challenges and changes in the health-care industry, Shroder continued to build upon HMHP’s strong foundation and tradition of excellence.

In 2007, under his leadership, HMHP expanded by building St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, the area’s first new acute-care inpatient hospital in almost 40 years. Seven years later, St. Elizabeth Boardman is opening a new, $100 million expansion this spring to meet growing demand for services.

Also, Shroder was instrumental in expanding pediatric care in the Mahoning Valley by bringing Akron Children’s Hospital here.

A relationship that began with Akron Children’s providing neonatal intensive care services at St. Elizabeth Youngstown evolved into Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Beeghly Campus in Boardman. Within the past week, maternity services and Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley NICU were moved from St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown to St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

In addition, cancer care in Trumbull County expanded under Shroder’s leadership with the establishment of the St. Joseph Cancer Center in Warren’s St. Joseph Health Center. Also, St. Elizabeth in Youngstown and Boardman and St. Joseph all earned Magnet status for excellence in nursing.

The HMHP network of care includes St. Elizabeth, St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth Boardman health centers, HMHP Physician Associates, HM Home Health Services, The Assumption Village, Humility House and Hospice of the Valley. HMHP is part of Catholic Health Partners.
