The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance recently honored Cassi Calderon as Gem of the Year at a joint dinner meeting with the Medical Society on March 28. The event took place at the Blue Wolf Banquet Center in Boardman.

The honor is given to a member who has served the Medical Alliance and the community with distinction.

Calderon is a pharmacist at Select Specialty Hospital and St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. She received a doctorate in pharmacy from Campbell University, completed a residency in pharmacy at the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore and was board certified as a pharmacotherapy specialist.

She has been a member of the Alliance since 2002 and has served as vice president, president-elect and president. She also served on many committees including the new members luncheon, TWIGS, officer installation and the annual charity fashion show. During her tenure the alliance raised more than $10,000, which was donated to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Garden of Hope.

Calderon also has participated in community activities. She has been a member of Dobbins Elementary PTO for many years and an assistant Cub Scout leader for her son’s den, and she is advancement coordinator for Boy Scout Troop 2. She also is assistant Girl Scout leader for her daughter’s troop and a member of Akron Children’s Hospital Kids Club and volunteers many hours supporting the kids of the Mahoning Valley.

Calderon, of Poland, lives with her husband, Dr. Javier Calderon and their two children, Diego and Gabriella.
