For attendees of Union Elementary’s Father-Daughter Night on March 25, there were plenty of fun activities to do that gave fathers a chance to spend quality time with their daughters.
Approximately 120 fathers and daughters attended the event. The activities included Jim Loboy from Channel 33 as deejay in the gymnasium, with dancing, hula hoop twirling and a limbo contest, Melanie Jones from the bake shop Harriett Sprinkles and her staff doing cupcake decorating in the lunch room and a chance for the daughters to dress up their fathers in old, amusing clothes.
“We have been having evenings like this for years, and it just so happened that this year it worked out where it’s Father-Daughter Night and it’s a night that dads can have just as much fun as their daughters and our PTO does a great job planning it,” said Union Elementary Principal Mike Masucci.
Nick Kalicatzaros attended along with his daughter Lexi, a fourth-grade student.
“It’s her last father-daughter until she moves on to fifth-grade,” he said. “It’s fun. We come whenever it’s my turn. We haven’t missed one.”
Lexi said she was having a good time and was looking forward to dressing up her father during that portion of the event.
“It’s fun so far,” she said. “Yeah, but he won’t like it [getting dressed up], though.”
Masucci said the Father-Daughter Night was as well-attended as it could be. He said it was a success in more ways than one.
“I think any time that we can get parents in the building with their children, it’s a wonderful opportunity to show how much fun we can have here at school, especially with dads who often aren’t able to volunteer or be here as much as they’d like,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for them to show their daughters how much they care about their education and their school. We’re grateful that we have such tremendous support. About 93 percent of our girls are back here tonight, and that’s just a fantastic turnout.”
