Fire destroys duplex

YOUNGSTOWN

A vacant 1819 Ohio Ave. duplex was destroyed in a fire about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday. The first crews to get there found fire on the first and second floors. Reports also said there was a blaze at the building March 10.

Damage is listed at $10,500.

Civil judgment

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Municipal Court Magistrate Anthony Sertick has rendered a $6,250 civil judgment for The Vindicator against Christian Rinehart of Youngstown, doing business as O’Donold’s Irish Pub and Grill, for an unpaid advertising bill. However, by agreement of both parties, he ruled the judgment could be satisfied in full if Rinehart pays The Vindicator $4,000 within 30 days.

Fire ruled intentional

YOUNGSTOWN

Fire reports said a blaze at a 445 Alameda Ave. home on the North Side was intentional. The fire happened about 7:35 p.m. Wednesday and caused $5,000 in damage.

Crews found a fire in the dining room, which was quickly extinguished, but there was heavy smoke damage. An elderly woman who lives there came home while firefighters were putting out the fire, reports said.

Big Tap In Promo

Magic Tree Pub & Eatery is hosting the Big Tap In Promo Party from 7 to 10 p.m. today to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley Harvest for Hunger.

Patrons can receive one ticket for every five cans of food donated to be entered into a drawing for VIP tickets, hotel rooms for the night of The Big Tap In, T-shirts and other prizes. The more canned goods donated the more drawing tickets received.

Harvest for Hunger is a communitywide food and funds drive that takes place in 21 counties in Northeast Ohio during March and April.

Habitat to build home for veteran

AUSTINTOWN

Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County and local volunteers will raise the walls of a local veteran’s home Saturday at 3889 New Road.

Volunteers are to arrive at 9 a.m.; the first wall is expected to go up at 9:30 a.m., and construction that day is slated to end at 3 p.m. This is the first veteran build project for HFHMC. Volunteers will be coming from Home Savings and Loan of Austintown, Austintown Community Church and friends and family of the homeowner, Marine Corps Staff Sgt. James Skok, an honorably discharged veteran. General Motors Foundation is the major sponsor for this home.

Contract change

Youngstown

The board of control approved a final contract change with the Garfield Heights company that demolished the former Paramount Theatre.

The panel approved the modification Thursday, making the amount paid to Baumann Enterprises $744,660. Charles Shasho, deputy director of public works, said the lot where the theater stood still must be paved and lighting installed. Landscaping also is planned.
