Nominate a hero

WARREN

The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is seeking nominations for its 2014 Acts of Courage Awards. Nominees who have saved a life must live or be employed in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties. The heroic event may have happened anywhere, but must have occurred between Jan. 1, 2013, and April 1, 2014.

It could be a person who entered a burning house to rescue a trapped family, a passer-by who pulled a drowning child to safety, or a neighbor who administered CPR to a total stranger. To nominate a local hero who helped save a life, call 330-392-2551. The nomination deadline is Thursday. Award recipients will be honored during a special reception and dinner hosted by the Red Cross.

The April gathering of the Circle of Friends social group will be 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Angels for Animals, 4750 W. South Range Road, Canfield, where the group will volunteer with the animals and review how to care for pets. Circle of Friends provides children on the autism spectrum with a supportive environment in which to practice relationship skills. Sponsored by the Autism Society of Ohio, the focus is on facilitating meaningful and fun friendships in an environment where children feel comfortable and supported. Launched in June 2013, the group is for children ages 3-18 years old and meets the second Tuesday of every month as an outing where youths can have fun under the support of trained educators and practitioners.
