METRO DIGEST || Great American Milk Drive for the hungry

Milk for the hungry

YOUNGSTOWN

Milk is a staple that is missing at Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, a member of Feeding America.

Thanks to The Great American Milk Drive, this is a problem that soon will change. This program is the first to help deliver gallons of milk to hungry families who need it most. The campaign goal is to deliver 2 million gallons of milk to food banks across the country.

Valley residents can contribute nutritious milk to food families with a click of a mouse or by text message. Residents can go to www.milklife.com/give or text “Milk” to 27722 and be able to buy milk and donate it for as little as $5 to a family who does not have regular access to the product.

2014 Envirothon

CANFIELD

The Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District will host Mahoning County’s 2014 Junior Envirothon, an academic, outdoor environmental competition for middle-school students.

Teams are tested on their knowledge of soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife and a current environmental issue, which this year will be composting. Working together, the students gain team-building skills, knowledge of science and appreciation for local natural resources.

The event will take place Thursday at Mill Creek MetroParks’ Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road. The district is looking for businesses that would like to support the event.

For information, contact Mahoning SWCD at 330-740-7995 or visit www.mahoningswcd.org. For information on state and national Envirothon competitions, visit www.envirothon.org.
