YOUNGSTOWN
Ronnye Beamon tweeted that he is leaving the Youngstown State men’s basketball program.
“The hardest part about leaving ysu is definitely going to be the relationships I made here.. But everything has its season,” he wrote.
Beamon, a redshirt freshman guard, played a total of 55 minutes over 13 games last season, scoring 10 total points. He is the second player to leave the program since the season ended, joining sophomore forward Ryan Weber.
McDermott, Marshall earn top AP honors
ARLINGTON, Texas
Doug McDermott, who finished his career at Creighton as college basketball’s fifth-leading scorer, was a near-unanimous selection as The Associated Press’ player of the year.
McDermott is the 11th three-time All-American and first in almost 30 years. He led the nation in scoring with a 26.7 average while shooting 52.6 percent from the field including 44.9 percent from 3-point range.
Gregg Marshall, whose Wichita State team was the first to reach the NCAA tournament undefeated in 33 years, was selected The Associated Press’ coach of the year. The Shockers entered the tournament at 34-0 and as a No. 1 seed. They became the first team in NCAA men’s history to win its first 35 games.
BC hires former Ohio U coach Jim Christian
BOSTON
Boston College has hired former Ohio University coach Jim Christian to lead its men’s basketball team.
Christian replaces Steve Donahue, who was fired after four seasons without an NCAA tournament berth.
Christian has led the Bobcats to a 49-22 record in two seasons. Before that, he spent 10 years at Texas Christian and Kent State. In all, he has led his teams to eight postseason berths in 12 years.
Florida State under investigation by feds
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
Florida State University is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for possible Title IX violations in its response to sexual violence complaints.
The investigation by the Office for Civil Rights stems from a complaint filed with it by the accuser in quarterback Jameis Winston’s sexual assault case. Charges were not filed by the Tallahassee Police Department against the Heisman trophy winner.
Winston was accused of sexual assault from an incident in Dec. 2012. Police decided not to press charges in Dec. 2013. The OCR will investigate all sexual assault complaints at the university during the last three years.
Mets’ Murphy, Collins defend paternity leave
NEW YORK
Daniel Murphy is proud he put fatherhood ahead of baseball, and New York Mets manager Terry Collins thinks criticism his second baseman received for taking paternity leave this week was unfair.
Murphy made his season debut Thursday, three days after the birth of son Noah. He calls staying in Florida an extra day “the right decision to make” following wife Victoria’s cesarean section and says “we felt the best thing for our family was for me to stay for an extra day.”
Major league rules allow up to three days of paternity leave.
Vindicator writer wins OPSWA awards
COLUMBUS
Vindicator sports writer Joe Scalzo won a first-place prize for column writing in the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association’s annual contest.
The column “Frightful Weather, Delightful Game” was about Cardinal Mooney’s Division IV state championship game loss to Clarksville Clinton-Massie.
Scalzo’s story “Vanishing Act,” which was about the declining number of athletes playing high school football, tied for third in the investigative/enterprise category. The Vindicator competes in Division I, which includes the state’s largest newspapers.
