Mahoning commissioners approve air show grant

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County commissioners today approved a county sponsorship of next month’s air show at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.

The commissioners approved a grant of $5,000 from hotel bed-tax receipts to the Youngstown Air Reserve Base Community Council for the May 17 and 18 show.

The show, named Thunder Over the Valley, will feature performances by the Air Force Thunderbirds air-demonstration squadron. Admission will be free, and no tickets will be required.

Show sponsors expect at least 75,000 people to attend, Linda Macala, county convention and visitors’ bureau director, told the commissioners.

The station’s last air show at the airport was in 2009.
