Kent locked down after gunshot Wed.

KENT (AP)

An order for students and faculty members to shelter in place after the firing of a gunshot at Kent State University has been lifted for all buildings on campus. A KSU spokeswoman said a male suspect fired the shot into the ground Wednesday night near Bowman Hall, an academic building. No injuries were reported.

The university advised people to stay put while police searched for the shooter, who was carrying a silver handgun. It later lifted the advisory.

University police are handling the investigation and the search for the shooter.

Kent State is a public research university with eight campuses in Northeast Ohio, including the main campus in this city of about 30,000. It was the site of shootings by Ohio National Guardsmen in 1970 that killed four during a Vietnam War protest.

1st fatality of 2014

YOUNGSTOWN

Police say the death of a motorcyclist Tuesday is the city’s first traffic-fatality of 2014. Officer Brian Booksing said the motorcyclist was traveling south on Interstate 680 at about 5:45 p.m. when he lost control on the Glenwood Avenue exit at High Street and struck a guardrail. He was thrown off the vehicle. Booksing declined to name the cyclist Wednesday, saying he was unsure the family had been notified. A spokeswoman for the Mahoning County Coroner’s office said she was unsure when the name would be released. Police are looking at speed as a factor, Booksing said.
