Food for veterans
LISBON
A veterans Stand Down event will be offered 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Columbiana County Career Center, 9364 state Route 45. Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley will provide food and produce. “Stand Downs” are part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to provide services to homeless veterans.
The food bank will distribute food to veterans and others in need of emergency food assistance. Information on additional community resources available to vets will be available. For information, 330-792-5522, ext. 15, or 330-507-0980.
Hiroshima exhibit

The Arab American Cultural and Educational Center and Veterans for Peace will present the “Hiroshima-Nagasaki Legacy Exhibit” from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. The Arab American Cultural & Educational Center is at 15 Belgrade Ave., Youngstown.
Fire damage

A fire at a former school building being used for storage caused $2,500 in damage.
Crews were called to 1387 Commonwealth Ave., which also was the former Odyssey School of Possibilities, after police responded to a burglar alarm and found a fire inside at about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Reports said the fire was in a classroom where several books had been placed in a pile and ignited. Police found a window that had been tampered with in another classroom that may have allowed someone to get inside.
Reports said the city school district now uses the building for storage.
Victims luncheon

The Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc.’s Victims’ Assistance Program will have a luncheon to honor victims of crime from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave. Keynote speaker will be Officer Helen Scott of the Youngstown Police Department, and guest speaker will be Amanda F. Forsythe.
Cost is $25. Checks must be made payable to The Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc. and mailed to Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc., P.O. Box 46, Youngstown, OH 44501. A total of 1.5 CEUs will be offered for counseling and social work.

Pinwheels for kids

For Child Abuse Prevention Month, Trumbull County Children Services, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Child Advocacy Center and Ohio Children’s Trust Fund are having a Pinwheels for Prevention event.
At 10 a.m. Friday, 1,667 pinwheels will be placed in the ground in front of the Children Services offices, 2282 Reeves Road NE, indicating the number of child-maltreatment reports received by the agency in 2013.
Warren Mayor Doug Franklin and State Rep. Sean O’Brien of Bazetta Township, D-63rd, will speak.
