Serena Williams upset in Family Circle Cup

CHARLESTON, S.C.

Serena Williams was ousted from the WTA Family Circle Cup on Tuesday, shocked 6-4, 6-4 by Jana Cepelova of Slovakia in the second round. Williams, the top seed and defending champion in Charleston, was looking for her second straight title and her third this year after winning a record seventh Sony Open last weekend.

Williams’ sister, Venus, also struggled on Tuesday, but edged Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-3, 0-6, 7-5.

Steelers sign former Texans CB McCain

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Houston cornerback Brice McCain to a one-year contract. Terms were not disclosed. McCain spent five seasons with the Texans after being selected in the sixth round of the 2009 draft. He started a career-high four games in 2013, finishing with one interception and 30 total tackles. The 27-year-old McCain has five interceptions in his career, including one returned for a touchdown. He is expected to fight for a spot in Pittsburgh’s nickel package behind starters Ike Taylor and Cortez Allen.

Ex-Eagles WR Jackson visits Redskins 2nd day

WASHINGTON

Three-time Pro Bowl receiver DeSean Jackson has met for a second day with the Washington Redskins as he looks for a new team following his release by the Philadelphia Eagles. Jackson arrived Monday evening and also spent part of Tuesday meeting with coaches and officials. He left Redskins Park without the team announcing a deal.

Jackson set career-highs with 82 catches for 1,332 yards last season for the NFC East champion Eagles, but Philadelphia tried to trade him and then cut him last week amid reports of off-the-field concerns.

LA coach Baylor has surgery on broken leg

ANAHEIM, Calif.

Los Angeles Angels hitting coach Don Baylor had surgery on his broken right leg Tuesday, a day after getting hurt while catching the ceremonial first pitch on opening day. Baylor, who joined the Los Angeles coaching staff in October, was in surgery while the Angels prepared for their second game against the Seattle Mariners. Baylor was hurt while merely squatting to catch the first pitch from Vladimir Guerrero.

Poland team captures team tennis thriller

BOARDMAN

Defending champion Poland rallied to win a super tie breaker in a 21-20 victory in late March over Hubbard in the championship final of the 12th annual Boardman Tennis Center Davis Cup League.

Poland’s Peter VandeKappelle, who was 11-0 on the season in singles play, downed Rodney Lehman, 8-3, and Hubbard’s Rajan Taneja defeated Marty Sweeney 8-2. In doubles VandeKappelle and Sweeney won 10-9 (7-4). Poland won the tiebreaker 10-5.

In other finals, Canfield A beat Calcutta, 26-17, for third place; Hermitage beat Boardman A, 26-12, for fifth; Canfield B topped Canfield C, 23-19, for seventh; Boardman B topped Youngstown B, 21-18, for ninth place; and Youngstown A topped Squaw Creek, 24-20, for 11th place.

JFK senior Bofenkamp signs with St. Francis

WARREN

Warren JFK’s Eric Bofenkamp signed a letter of intent to play football at St. Francis University. Bofenkamp, a four-year letter winner in football, was first team all-district and second team all-Ohio as a kicker in 2012. He was named Kennedy’s special teams player of the year in 2012 also.

Bofenkamp also was a four-yetter letterman in soccer and lettered three years in basketball. He was North Coast League MVP in 2013 in soccer and was second team all-District.
