Come the week of May 1, a brand-new Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream and Yogurt will open at 7485 South Ave.

The current location at 7365 South Ave. will close down just before the opening of the new location.

“We needed to have a brand-new building, and we wanted easier access for people to get in and out,” Handel’s owner Leonard Fisher said. “We are going to be open the first week of May, and we will look at doing a $1 cone day to celebrate.”

The current South Avenue Handel’s has been open since 1995, and since that time, the company has seen customers’ difficulty in getting their ice cream.

The new location will offer expanded land space for parking, but the building itself will be the same size as the old one.

“It will be a lot easier for people to hang out and enjoy their ice cream,” Fisher said.

There will also be a handicapped-access window at the new location and there will be a concrete walk around the building.

Fisher said he is unsure what will become of the old property, which Handel’s leased from A.S.I. Family Partnership.

Handel’s will own the new South Avenue location, which was constructed by Deeley Enterprises Inc. of Boardman.
