Documentary about boxer Mancini will be screened here Favorite son on film

Youngstowners will finally get a chance to see a film about one of the city’s most-famous athletes.
“The Good Son,” the documentary about former boxing champion and Youngstown native Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, will be screened Oct. 26 at noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at The Oakland Center for Arts, 220 W. Boardman St., downtown.
Mancini will be present for all three screenings to introduce the film and then to answer audience questions afterward.
“I am very happy that after many obstacles, we finally are able to have a public screening in Youngstown for the many fans that have supported me through the years,” Mancini told The Vindicator.
The film, based on the book of the same name written by Mark Kriegel, was originally screened in Youngstown’s Ford Family Recital Hall to an invitation-only audience in September 2012.
It was officially released in July of this year, and is available on iTunes.
The film, directed by Jesse James Miller, depicts Mancini’s personal account of his family history, his father’s legacy and his rise to fame. It delves into the unsolved killing of his brother and the tragic Duk Koo Kim fight, after which the Korean boxer died of injuries.
“The Good Son” features appearances by actors Mickey Rourke and Ed O’Neill; boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and members of Kim’s family, including the late boxer’s son, Jiwan Kim.
It is being screened in theaters in major cities across the country this fall, with Mancini present at each location. Mancini plans to submit the film for consideration for major awards.
Tickets for the Youngstown screenings are $10 and must be purchased in advance by screening times from the following links.
