Former Steelers DE Greenwood dies at 67

PITTSBURGH

Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end L.C. Greenwood, who won four Super Bowls as a member of the “Steel Curtain” defense, has died. He was 67.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office says Greenwood died Sunday from undisclosed causes just before noon at Presbyterian Hospital.

Greenwood was a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All Pro during his career from 1969-1981 and was honored on the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 1970s. Famous for wearing gold cleats when he played, Greenwood joined Joe Greene, Ernie Holmes and Dwight White to form the line that served as the linchpin for the defense that helped the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories in a six-year span.

J.C. Chavez Jr. wins unanimous decision

CARSON, Calif.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. won a unanimous decision over Bryan Vera on Saturday in his return to the ring from a yearlong absence.

Chavez (47-1-1) overcame weight struggles and a lively challenge from the unsung Vera to get the decision on all three judges’ scorecards, winning 96-94, 97-93 and 98-92. The StubHub Center crowd roundly booed the decision. Chavez missed the original 168-pound contract limit for the bout, and the notorious boxing scion struggled just to get to the new 173-pound limit.

Vera (23-7) was furious with the verdict, feeling he outpointed Chavez with superior activity and aggression in the 10-round bout.
