CANFIELD

When Matt and Edith Haus decided to buy a small peach farm in 1954, they most likely did not expect it to become what it is today.

The Haus Apple Orchards and Cider Mill, 6742 W. Calla Road, is filled corner to corner with every kind of apple product imaginable. The marketplace’s shelves are lined with applesauce, jams, apple butter, bag-your-own apples and other apple products.

The farm also is known for its sauerkraut, freshly cooked doughnuts and homemade pies that can be smelled from a mile away.

But what keeps people coming back is the most-distinguishing part of the farm: The apple-cider mill situated right in the middle of the marketplace for all to see exactly how cider is made.

Fresh apples are brought in from the orchard, mashed into a paste, and pressed until the cider runs into a holding cell where it waits to be bottled into gallon containers.

The containers are then labeled and sold right before your eyes. It’s nearly impossible to watch the process and leave the store without a gallon or two.

The second generation of Hauses, Matt Haus and his wife, Cheryl, took over the farm in 1982 and hope to pass it down to their children.

“All of the family staying involved over the years kept this place going,” Edith explained. “It’s an enjoyable life, and it’s the love of the farming that keeps you at it, not the money.”

Next year, they will celebrate their 60th year in business. The Haus family created a tradition that is sure to last for generations to come.
