Rocco Nero to address Curbstone Coaches

Rocco Nero, Superintendent of Lowellville Schools, will be the guest speaker at the Curbstone Coaches meeting.

The group will meet at Lucianno’s Cafe Monday at noon.

In addition to his duties with Lowellville schools, Nero sits on the OHSAA NE Ohio Board of Controls and is a member of the OHSAA Competitive Balance Committee.

YSU soccer shut out

Dayton

The Youngstown State women’s soccer team dropped its Horizon League opener to Wright State, 1-0, on Saturday.

Wright State’s Emilie Fillion scored the game’s only goal at the 49th minute to lift the Raiders.

The Penguins are 2-8-1, 0-1 and the Raiders are 3-4-3, 1-0.

Southington upended

Brecksville

The Garfield Heights Trinity football team upended Southington 49-6 on Saturday.

Trinity quarterback Kyle McSweeney hit wideout Griffin Filippi for three first half touchdowns as the Trojans (3-2) rolled over the Wildcats (3-2).

McSweeney hit Pat Sobolewsky from 19 yards out with 6:16 left in the second quarter and the Trojans also ran for 308 yards as a team.

Cody Helmuth scored Southington’s only touchdown, a third quarter run.

Logano takes Dover Nationwide Series race

DOVER, Del.

His chase for a Cup championship all but over, Joey Logano turned his pursuit toward Dover history.

Logano dominated at Dover International Speedway once more and took the checkered flag in the track’s Nationwide Series race for the fourth straight time. Logano became the first driver to win four straight races at Dover in NASCAR’s second-tier series.

He pulled away in the No. 22 Ford down the stretch Saturday and was never seriously challenged for the win on the mile track.

Ethiopian wins Akron Marathon by 3 seconds

AKRON

An Ethiopian has won the Akron Marathon by three seconds.

Twenty-four-year-old Getachew Asfaw, who trains in Silver Spring, Md., won Saturday’s marathon in a time of two hours, 15 minutes and 59 seconds.

The second-place finisher three seconds back was Kenyan Josef Mutinda, who is based in Santa Fe, N.M. Fifteen-thousand runners signed up for the marathon and related races with a special overseas military touch.

The marathon invited Ohio Army National Guard members serving in Kuwait to participate in a “shadow race” at their overseas camp.

Peters captures Las Vegas truck race

LAS VEGAS

Timothy Peters raced to his second NASCAR Truck Series victory of the year and seventh overall Saturday night, pulling away on a late restart at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Jennifer Jo Cobb forced the final caution, hitting the wall in the second turn. Series victory leader Ron Hornaday had the lead on the restart with two laps to go, but quickly dropped to fifth and finished sixth.

Johnny Sauter was second, followed by Miguel Paludo and Ty Dillon. Points leader Matt Crafton was 11th.
