Fire displaces family

GIRARD

A Prospect Street family was staying with relatives Saturday night after fire forced them from their home.

Firefighters were called to the home at 206 W. Prospect about 4 p.m. where one of the residents told them a candle had been burning in the basement.

The fire climbed to the first floor through the stairwell, causing an estimated $40,000 damage, a fire department spokesman said.

A child at the home was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Painting party

The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will host an “Arty Party” family event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct.15 at the West Fork Roadhouse, 3850 Belmont Ave.

All are invited to come and create a masterpiece at the interactive painting party.

An easel, paint, canvas, apron and instruction will be provided. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

The cost is $40 for member families (two people) and $50 for nonmember families (two people).

Tree needed

COLUMBIANA

The Columbiana Area Tourism Bureau is looking for a 35- to 40-foot pine tree to be on display in Columbiana’s town square during this year’s Christmas season.

Organizers at the bureau will light and decorate the tree in preparation for this year’s Light Up the Night event at 6 p.m. Nov. 22 on Main Street.

During the event, the downtown Christmas lights are switched on and the 2013 “Joy of Christmas” light show will open at nearby Firestone Park.

The city of Columbiana will cut, haul and install the tree on town square, along with a sign announcing the donor’s name.

The First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown will host Dr. Tobias Winright, director of Manresa Program in Catholic Jesuit Studies at St. Louis University, on Thursday at Antone’s Banquet Centre on Market Street.

His topic will be “Liturgy and God’s Justice for All: The Eucharist of Theological Basis for Understanding Recent Catholic Teaching on Capital Punishment.” The program is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $15; call 330-720-4498.

Candidates forum

YOUNGSTOWN

The Junior Civic League and the Community Mobilization Coalition will host a candidates forum at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7 in Fellowship Hall of New Bethel Church, 1507 Hillman St.

Those invited to attend are candidates for Youngstown mayor, council president and the board of education.

Also, the two charter amendments — a fracking ban and the elimination of the park and recreation commission — on the Nov. 5 ballot will be discussed.

Moderators for the forum are Susan M. Moorer, Junior Civic League president, and the Rev. Kenneth L. Simon, pastor of New Bethel and chairman of the Community Mobilization Coalition.
