The traditional blessing of animals celebrates the life of St. Francis of Assisi, who was known for his love of all creatures.

Sacred Heart devotions planned

YOUNGSTOWN

Next week, devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be conducted after first Friday Masses at noon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel, and 6 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1125 Turin Ave.

Refreshments will follow the 6 p.m. Mass.

Children of Mary Prayer Group will meet at 11 a.m. Oct. 5 for prayer and confessions. Light refreshments will follow Mass.

Pastor retiring

wellsville

The Rev. Roosevelt Thompson, pastor of First Baptist Church in Wellsville, will be honored at a retirement banquet Oct. 19 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church hall, Youngstown.

Tickets, which are $40, may be obtained by calling the church at 330-532-2654 by Oct. 5.

Novena underway

NORTH LIMA

National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, 2759 N. Lipkey Road, is conducting the annual St. Therese novena at 7 p.m. through Tuesday.

The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated with the novena prayers on the weekdays and vespers and benediction with novena prayers today and Sunday.

On Tuesday, refreshments will be offered in the Antioch Room. For information, call 330-538-3351.

Concerts at church

NORTH LIMA

The Blackwood Quartet will be in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at North Lima Mennonite Church, 90 Mennonite Drive.

The Friends Singers, featuring special guest performers from Romania, will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. The program is made possible by Friendship International Ministries, an American-based mission that works in Chile, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Romania and the U.S. The program will feature southern Gospel selections.

A free-will offering will be taken at the events.

The 183rd semi-annual worldwide General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be broadcast live Oct. 5 and 6 from the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The broadcast will be received at noon and 4 p.m. both days at the Youngstown Stake Center, 2205 Tibbits-Wick Road.

Thomas S. Monson, church president, will speak. Messages will be given by the First Presidency, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and other general authorities and officers of the Church. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir will provide music and present “Music and the Spoken Word” at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 6.
