Junior Women’s League to host fall conference

The GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will host the GFWC/OHIO Federation of Women’s Club’s 2013 Northeast District Fall Conference.

An evening full of fun, friendship and information will be Sept. 30 at Caf 422 at 8586 South Ave. Registration begins from 5:30-6 p.m. Call to order starts at 6 p.m.

GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Traveling officers will be in attendance to give remarks and updates on the Community Service Programs and Special Projects. Corky Nosek, GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs President will be attending along with Linda Crish, OFWC director of junior clubs and Yvonne Ford, ORWC director of junior clubs elect.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

They will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

New restaurant to open

The Shops at Boardman Park will be soon be offering a new option in dining to the Boardman area: DiBella’s Old Fashioned Subs.

DiBella’s will be located next to Quaker Steak and Lube, and offer old-fashioned quality and value in their dining experience. They provide a unique casual atmosphere, reminiscent of a 1940’s NY style corner sandwich shop.

ABWA meeting to be Oct. 8

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at A La Cart Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield.

Owner Ron Cohen will speak about the recent grand opening of The Valley Marketplace, located at 6121 South Ave. in Boardman. The menu is roast pork, turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, buttered green beans, tossed salad, applesauce, three bean salad, rolls, pumpkin cake and coffee or tea.

Literary Society to feature best-selling author

Jessica Fellowes, author of “The World of Downton Abbey” and its follow-up, “The Chronicles of Downton Abbey, is the featured author for the 10th Literary Society event, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m.

Due to overwhelming response, the event has been moved from the Main Library to Stambaugh Auditorium.

Admission to the fundraising event is $65 and includes dinner, a book and booksigning. Jessica is the niece of Julian Fellowes, creator of the hit “Downton Abbey” series.

Spaghetti dinner tickets on sale

The Poland Marching Band is currently selling tickets to their annual spaghetti dinner which will be offered on Oct. 6 at the PSHS cafeteria beginning at noon.

Ticket prices are $7 adults; $5 for children; preschool and under free. Carry out is available.

All proceeds will help pay for the students’ band trip to Disney World where the band will be performing on New Year’s Eve at the Magic Kingdom.

Ladies talk business

The Poland library will host Ladies Day with the Business and Investment Center on Oct. 12 at 9:30 a.m.

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. Doug Holland will speak on reflexology, the therapy performed on hands and feet to relieve pain in the body. The meeting will be at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, and all are welcome.

Volunteer class to begin

Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer class begins Friday, Oct. 18 at Hospice House, 9603 Sharrott Road, Poland. Classes are 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. every Friday for five weeks through Nov. 15.

Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how volunteers fit into that team.

Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes as well as helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility. New volunteers are needed for all areas of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties and western Pennsylvania. Although the training is at Hospice House this time, volunteers are assigned to patients closer to their homes.

Hospice House is located on the grounds of The Assumption Village, 9800 Market St., North Lima. Entrance to the facility is either off Sharrott Road or Market Street. For more information or to register, call 330-788-1992.

Corn hole tournament set

Legacy Dog Rescue will host a charity corn hole tournament on Sept. 28 at O’Donald’s, located at 6000 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown.

Registration begins at noon. The cost for early registration is $40 per team of two, or $50 the day of. The event will include a cash bar, cash prizes, 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction.

MVHS Welcomes Cass Warner to Tyler History Center

Cass Warner, granddaughter of the founder of the Warner Bros. movie studio, will speak at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s Tyler History Center, located at 325 W. Federal St., in Youngstown at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. After a brief talk, Warner will screen her award winning 2008 documentary “The Brothers Warner,” follow by a question and answer session. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at the Arms Family Museum, located at 648 Wick Ave. in Youngstown, by calling 330-743-2589 or by sending a check and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the MVHS, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown, 44502.

Poland Historical Society sets fall schedule

The Poland Historical Society meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Each month the regular business meetings will start at 6:30 p.m. with a free program planned for 7:30 p.m. which are open to the public. The program schedule is as follows:

Oct. 13 – Free fall open house, 1-3 p.m., at the schoolhouse. Activities and pumpkin painting are planned to entertain the children.

Oct. 15 – Regular meeting will include election of the historical society officers and trustees for 2014. Sally Thomas from the Sutliff Museum will speak about the Underground Railroad.

Nov. 19 – Following the business meeting, historical society trustees will talk about why and how “Poland” got its name.

Dec. 17 – Annual Christmas dinner for members will be offered at the schoolhouse.

Casino trip to be Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Diorio named registered representative

Learn about tremendous trees

Tremendous Trees will be Sept. 28 from 1:30-3 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. In the class, children ages 6 and up will discuss the importance of trees and their uses, identify trees in the gardens and create their own tree field guide to take home. The Metro Parks will host Bounding with Butterflies Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. until noon at Fellows Riverside Garden. Cub Scout packs to host round ups

Cub Scouting is a year round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade. Cub Scouting is the largest of the Boy Scouts of America’s three traditional membership programs with approximately. 1.7 million boys and their families involved throughout the United States.

The beginning of the school year is the traditional time for boys and their families to join Cub Scouts but a boy can join at any time. During the month of September, local Cub Scout Packs in Mahoning County and Hubbard, Ohio are hosting recruitment nights called round-ups to give boys and their families an opportunity to experience a little of the fun and adventure that the Cub Scouts experience all year long.

Members of SCORE will address key topics for beginning a business and Stuart Gibbs, the Business and Investment Center librarian, will discuss the library’s sources and services for business start-up and beyond. Fall festival set

Poland-Boardman Child Care Center, located at 1940 Boardman Poland Road, is hosting the second annual fall festival Sept. 21 from 1-5 p.m.

The festival will include food, games, a bounce-around, crafts, fire trucks and the MedEvac helicopter.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments. The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
