Motorcycle fatal

LISBON

The passenger on a motorcycle was killed and the driver seriously injured Thursday afternoon when the driver lost control on a curve on state Route 9, south of Whinnery Road in Butler Township, went off the road into a wooded area, and hit two trees.

Killed was Kara Molnar of Adena, Ohio, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Columbiana County coroner. The driver, Richard Hall of Kingsport, Tenn., was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where he was listed in stable condition.

According to the Lisbon Post of the Ohio Highway State Patrol, the motorcycle was southbound on Route 9 about 3:10 p.m. when it went off the right side of the road. Hall and Molnar were thrown from the cycle. Neither was wearing a helmet, OHSP said.

The Wynona Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service and KLG Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Toys for Tots 5K race

CORTLAND

Marine Corps Reserve Detachment 3, Maintenance Company, is kicking off its annual Toys for Tots campaign at its third annual 5K race, cookout and family event Sunday at Imagination Station Park, 3372 Warren-Meadville Road.

The race is open to the public. Registration is from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and the race begins at 3. For participants registering for the race at the event, the fee is $25 with proceeds benefiting the Toys for Tots campaign. The first 50 registered runners receive a free T-shirt.

The event also will feature music, raffles, food, a bounce house for kids and a pull-up competition.

The mission of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in that community.

Home Savings donation

YOUNGSTOWN

The Home Savings Charitable Foundation recently donated $6,000 to Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley.

The foundation’s support will be used for Junior Achievement’s K-12 programs across the Mahoning Valley and scholarships for the JA Titan Business Challenge.

Pamela Berry, director of Home Savings Charitable Foundation, said, “We are excited about giving them the opportunity to reach more students with the tools they’ll need to reach long-term success.”

Raider Regatta

NORTH LIMA

The 16th annual Raider Regatta begins at 12:15 p.m. Monday at South Range Business Complex, 11863 South Ave. The event features boats constructed by the sophomore class of South Range High School.

The students will sail their boats across the lake at Memorial Park, behind the business complex. In the event of rain, the regatta will be moved to Thursday.

Each group, consisting of two to six students, was instructed to create a sailboat using only cardboard and duct tape. The project is aimed at making students use their math, science, English and problem-solving skills, school officials said.

Several awards will be given for boats and participants in the regatta. The event is open to the public.

TJ Maxx theft

BOARDMAN

Township police arrested two cleaning personnel from TJ Maxx, Boardman-Canfield Road, after they were caught stealing merchandise from the store.

An internal theft investigator for the store told police he caught Carrie Grossen, 36, and George Tutoki, 35, both of Girard, stealing multiple items as they worked Tuesday, according to a police report. They were arrested Wednesday and face theft charges.

Grossen stole $279.87 worth of merchandise, and Tutoki stole $413.76 worth of merchandise, according to police reports.

Grossen was released on a summons, but Tutoki was transported to Austintown Police Department for an active warrant on a charge of receiving stolen property.

2 charged in theft

WARREN

Two men were arraigned Thursday in Warren Municipal Court on aggravated burglary charges.

Police found a white vehicle parked in the 1500 block of Valley Avenue Southwest in the Highland Homes apartments that matched the description of one used to leave a crime at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Palmyra Road SW.

Officers checked 1557 Valley and found Timothy E. Shearer, 25, of Hazelwood Avenue and James A. Horner, 20, of East Margaret Ave., Niles, inside.

The victim identified Shearer and Horner as two of three men involved in taking a gaming system from a Palmyra Road address while using a handgun. Officers found a system and accessories in the apartment. User names inside identified it as coming from the Palmyra address, they said.

Horner was released from the Trumbull County jail after pleading innocent and posting $20,000 bond. Shearer remained in the jail on $20,000 bond after pleading innocent.
