Youngstown State men’s basketball coach Jerry Slocum has added Kevin Bruinsma to his staff as the director of basketball operations.

Prior to joining the Youngstown State staff, Bruinsma served as the Director of Basketball Technology at the University of Portland for the 2012-13 season.

Horner, Van Garderen seek road race medal

FLORENCE, Italy

Americans Christopher Horner and Tejay van Garderen believe that they have a shot at winning the road race Sunday at the cycling world championships.

And with an American team strong from top to bottom supporting them, it’s slightly surprising that the U.S. riders are still not considered a major threat.

Van Garderen finished fifth in last year’s Tour de France and at 25 is considered a rider capable of winning a Grand Tour one day. Horner just won the Spanish Vuelta at the advanced age of 41 to become the oldest winner of a Grand Tour.

America’s Cup was true adrenaline rush

SAN FRANCISCO

Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts got it right. The staid old America’s Cup can be an adrenaline rush.

On the brink of an embarrassing blowout, Oracle Team USA hooked into a wild ride around San Francisco Bay at 40 mph that didn’t end until its fast, black catamaran had pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in sports.

Down 8-1, Oracle won eight straight races to keep the America’s Cup in America and send Emirates Team New Zealand back Down Under to ponder its collapse.

The biggest winner was probably the overall image of the oldest trophy in international sports.

Jamaican soccer player banned for doping

ZURICH

FIFA has suspended Jamaican player Jermaine Hue for nine months after he tested positive for a banned substance at a World Cup qualifying match.

FIFA says team doctor Carlton Fraser is banned from soccer for four years for administering the drug, dexamethasone. Hue, a 35-year-old midfielder, tested positive after Jamaica’s 2-0 loss against Honduras in Tegucigalpa on June 11.

Jamaica is last in a six-team CONCACAF qualifying group and has little chance of qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

FIFA says Hue’s suspension expires on May 6, 2014.
