Cards remain undefeated
The Canfield 140 pounds Cardinals remained undefeated moving to 5-0 (league and 6-0 overall) after beating Struthers 38-8 on Sept. 22.
Canfield started the game in typical fashion slamming Struthers on the second play of the game when Nick Crawford scored from 44 yards out. The point after touchdown was converted by Ethan Fletcher on a pitch to the corner of the end zone.
On Struthers first possession on a desperate fourth down Canfield’s Jake Kowal intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards to the Wildcats 24 yard line. On the first offense play of the second series Santino Marucci rambled 24 yards on an option play for the Cardinals second touchdown. Marucci hit Craword for the two point conversion.
After a Struthers three and out, Canfield went to work and Crawford punched it in from nine and the conversion was missed on an incomplete pass. Struthers again threw an interception with Greg Karas taking it away from the Cats. The Cardinals worked down the field on their next possession finishing with Fletcher going the distance from 15 followed by a Marucci to Crawford conversion. Struthers again could not move the ball on offense. The Cardinals took over the ball and Anthony D’Alesio caught a crucial ball over the middle from tight end to set Canfield up in scoring position. Marucci threw to Karas from the 6 yard line for another touchdown and Fletcher punched in the conversion. At the half it was 38-0 Cardinals. Great defensive play from Seth Hull, Michael Gonda and Angelo Cestone held the Cats scoreless in the first half. David Noday, David Reinhart and Gavin Tareshawty received high praise for blocking and Taylor Cessna was a factor on offense filling in for an injured Peyton Kostelic. Trevor Watson had an oustanding catch in the second half to put the Cats deep in their own side of the gridiron.
The Cardinals will be playing the St. Christine’s Crusaders at St. Christines today at 11 a.m., followed by at league rival Poland Sunday at 2 p.m.
