Junior Women’s League to host fall conference

The GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will host the GFWC/OHIO Federation of Women’s Club’s 2013 Northeast District Fall Conference. An evening full of fun, friendship and information will be Sept. 30 at Caf 422 at 8586 South Ave. Registration begins from 5:30-6 p.m. Call to order starts at 6 p.m.

GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Traveling officers will be in attendance to give remarks and updates on the Community Service Programs and Special Projects. Corky Nosek, GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs President will be attending along with Linda Crish, OFWC director of junior clubs and Yvonne Ford, ORWC director of junior clubs elect.

Support group to meet Oct. 16

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. Doug Holland will speak on reflexology, the therapy performed on hands and feet to relieve pain in the body. The meeting will be at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, and all are welcome.

Literary Society to feature best-selling author

Jessica Fellowes, author of “The World of Downton Abbey” and its follow-up, “The Chronicles of Downton Abbey, is the featured author for the 10th Literary Society event, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. Due to overwhelming response, the event has been moved from the Main Library to Stambaugh Auditorium. Admission to the fundraising event is $65 and includes dinner, a book and booksigning. Jessica is the niece of Julian Fellowes, creator of the hit “Downton Abbey” series. Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

They will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return at approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

New restaurant to open

The Shops at Boardman Park will be soon be offering a new option in dining to the Boardman area: DiBella’s Old Fashioned Subs.

DiBella’s will be located next to Quaker Steak and Lube, and offer old-fashioned quality and value in their dining experience. They provide a unique casual atmosphere, reminiscent of a 1940’s NY style corner sandwich shop. ABWA meeting to be Oct. 8

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at A La Cart Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield.

Owner Ron Cohen will speak about the recent grand opening of The Valley Marketplace, located at 6121 South Ave. in Boardman. The menu is roast pork, turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, buttered green beans, tossed salad, applesauce, three bean salad, rolls, pumpkin cake and coffee or tea. The cost is $17.75 per person and guests are welcome.

If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop by at 9 a.m. at the Canfield library Oct. 11 and 12 to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons or learning new tips from other coupon-clippers.

Bring your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone to the Canfield library at 6:30 on Oct. 22 and they will show you how to download digital books from the library’s Digital Catalog on the library website.

Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence, and encourages a love of reading at the Canfield library on Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m..

Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs.

Lego my library on Tuesday

Children, age 6 and up, can create Lego designs at the Canfield library on Oct. 8 from 6-8 p.m. Legos will be provided.

Gotta move storytime set

Children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver can join the Canfield library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development, and motivate language learning on Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. Adults and kids, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance and talk and play.

Church to host drive through dinner

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, Canfield will host a drive through chicken dinner on Oct. 3 from 4 p.m. until sold out. The cost is $7 and includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Corn hole tournament set

Legacy Dog Rescue will host a charity corn hole tournament on Sept. 28 at O’Donald’s, located at 6000 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown.

Registration begins at noon. The cost for early registration is $40 per team of two, or $50 the day of. The event will include a cash bar, cash prizes, 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction.

MVHS Welcomes Cass Warner to Tyler History Center

Cass Warner, granddaughter of the founder of the Warner Bros. movie studio, will speak at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s Tyler History Center, located at 325 W. Federal St., in Youngstown at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. After a brief talk, Warner will screen her award winning 2008 documentary “The Brothers Warner,” follow by a question and answer session. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at the Arms Family Museum, located at 648 Wick Ave. in Youngstown, by calling 330-743-2589 or by sending a check and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the MVHS, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown, 44502.

Casino trip to be Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Learn about tremendous tree

Tremendous Trees will be Sept. 28 from 1:30-3 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. In the class, children ages 6 and up will discuss the importance of trees and their uses, identify trees in the gardens and create their own tree field guide to take home. The Metro Parks will host Bounding with Butterflies Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. until noon at Fellows Riverside Garden. Farmers National Bank funds scholarship

Farmers National Bank reaffirmed its simultaneous commitment to community and education with a $3,000 gift to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC).

OFIC applied these funds to a scholarship for Ryan Pollifrone of Boardman. Pollifrone is a finance and political science major at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus.

Farmers has provided annual donations to the OFIC over the last 8 years. The OFIC, which is headquartered in Columbus, works with corporations, foundations and individuals to provide scholarship assistance to 100,000 students.

Donate food items

Canfield Operation Blessing distributes food at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. every third Thursday of the month. In order to continue to help local families in need, the church is asking for donations of non-perishable goods at the following locations during the month of August: Canfield Police Department, Canfield Fire Department, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, The Broad Street Diner, Bob and Chuck Eddy Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Fiat and Firm Fitness and Spray Tan (Hilltop Plaza). Monetary donations can be sent to Canfield Operation Blessing, P.O. Box 652, Canfield, Ohio 44406.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.

Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.

Family garden Fridays set

The Metro Parks will host Family Garden Fridays every Friday now through September from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities will be centered on gardening with children.
