Junior Women’s League to host fall conference

The GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will host the GFWC/OHIO Federation of Women’s Club’s 2013 Northeast District Fall Conference. An evening full of fun, friendship and information will be Sept. 30 at Caf 422 at 8586 South Ave. Registration begins from 5:30-6 p.m. Call to order starts at 6 p.m.

GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Traveling officers will be in attendance to give remarks and updates on the Community Service Programs and Special Projects. Corky Nosek, GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs President will be attending along with Linda Crish, OFWC director of junior clubs and Yvonne Ford, ORWC director of junior clubs elect.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

They will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

ABWA meeting to be Oct. 8

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at A La Cart Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield.

Owner Ron Cohen will speak about the recent grand opening of The Valley Marketplace, located at 6121 South Ave. in Boardman. The menu is roast pork, turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, buttered green beans, tossed salad, applesauce, three bean salad, rolls, pumpkin cake and coffee or tea.

Trash and treasure sale

Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, will host its 20th annual Trash and Treasure sale Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Most items will be 50 cents, with a “fill a bag for a buck” special from 2-3 p.m. Call 330-758-4513 for information. Proceeds will benefit Serendipity Christian Learning Center, which serves children 3-5 years-old.

Support group to meet Oct. 16

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. Doug Holland will speak on reflexology, the therapy performed on hands and feet to relieve pain in the body. The meeting will be at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, and all are welcome.

New restaurant

The Shops at Boardman Park will be soon be offering a new option in dining for those in the Boardman area: DiBella’s Old Fashioned Subs.

DiBella’s will be located next to Quaker Steak and Lube, and offer old-fashioned quality and value in their dining experience. They provide a unique casual atmosphere, reminiscent of a 1940’s NY style corner sandwich shop. Luncheon fundraiser set

A Halloween luncheon fundraiser will be Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Boardman library meeting room. There will be a scarf demonstration by Caryl Sprankle of Shine On Me By Caryl; a raffle with Halloween and fall baskets and a autumn floral centerpiece demonstration by Kathy Foster. Tickets are $20.

Friends of the Library meeting set

The Boardman Friends of the Library meeting will be Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. The meeting will explore The Hubble Telescope. Dr. Pat Durrell from YSU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy will be the presenter.

TAB meeting set

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m. They meet the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Newcomers are always welcome. For teens in grades 7-12.

The Boardman library will host a Dr. Frankenstein party on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Come in costume if you like, the party will include eerie music, disgusting games, a gross craft and yummy (or mummy?) refreshments. For Tweens in grades 4-6.

Sensory story time set

The Boardman library will host sensory story time Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. for children of all ages with a sensory focus. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. Children will enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Roadster race car exhibit to be Oct. 5

Ryan Martino of Martino Motorsports will bring out his Top Dragster to the Boardman library parking lot, on Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. for an autograph session, and a celebrity story time. There will be a craft for the kids. This event is free and open to the public. Bring the whole family and be sure to bring your camera.

Trash and treasure sale set

Boardman United Methodist church will host a fall trash and treasure sale on Oct. 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The church is located at 6809 Market St. in Boardman. Thursday is bargain bag day. Coffee and donuts will be available.

International buffet set

Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, will host their annual international buffet on Oct. 19, with two seatings: 4 and 6 p.m.

Cost is $15 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12, children under 6 are free. The dinner includes food and desserts from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. No tickets will be sold at the door and there are no carry outs. Tickets are available by calling the church office at 330-758-5745 or Nancy at 330-758-9309. Tickets must be purchase by Oct. 13. Proceeds will used for community outreach and the support of Bethel’s ministry.

Corn hole tournament set

Legacy Dog Rescue will host a charity corn hole tournament on Sept. 28 at O’Donald’s, located at 6000 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown.

Registration begins at noon. The cost for early registration is $40 per team of two, or $50 the day of. The event will include a cash bar, cash prizes, 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction.

Dickey earns academic scholarship

Hailey Dickey of Boardman has earned a Muskingum Academic Scholarship at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio.

These scholarships at Muskingum University recognize academic achievement by new and returning students to support their current and future educational goals.

Spaghetti dinner to benefit Love This Place

A spaghetti dinner benefiting Love This Place will be hosted at Bridge of Hope Church, located at 7580 Glenwood Avenue in Boardman, Oct. 6 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults or carryout and $4 for children ages 6-10 years-old. Casino trip Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Check in at Ford Nature Center to get a list of nature items to track down and document with a digital camera or phone. Everyone is welcome to the digital scavenger hunt, to be Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. This event is especially recommended for families with older children. Easy-moderate rating, miles are up to you.

Search for the pawpaw

The Metro Parks will host a search for the pawpaw Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. What is a pawpaw? Spend part of the first day of autumn with the Metro Parks and you will find out. Meet at Deerpath Trail off Hitchcock Road. The hike has a moderate rating of 1.5 miles.

Learn about tremendous trees

Tremendous Trees will be Sept. 28 from 1:30-3 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. In the class, children ages 6 and up will discuss the importance of trees and their uses, identify trees in the gardens and create their own tree field guide to take home. Bounding with butterflies

The Metro Parks will host Bounding with Butterflies Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. until noon at Fellows Riverside Garden. Farmers National Bank funds scholarship

Farmers National Bank reaffirmed its simultaneous commitment to community and education with a $3,000 gift to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC).

OFIC applied these funds to a scholarship for Ryan Pollifrone of Boardman. Pollifrone is a finance and political science major at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus.

Farmers has provided annual donations to the OFIC over the last 8 years. The OFIC, which is headquartered in Columbus, works with corporations, foundations and individuals to provide scholarship assistance to 100,000 students.

Soccer teams play for cancer

The Boardman High School girls soccer team will play in the fourth annual breast cancer game Sept. 28 at the high school. The game between the junior varsity and varsity will begin at 12:30 p.m. There will be several refreshments to purchase, baskets to raffle off and a short program to honor those who have been affected by this horrible disease.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.

Pilates Sculpt will be offered every Wednesday in September from 6-7 p.m. Join trainer Angela Lubonovich in using light hand weights to tone the body with emphasis on core strength and control. Practice Yoga at the park
